Fave places 2012: Wynwood Arts District, Miami FL USA (part one)

Miami - Wynwood Arts District loveI wasn’t prepared for the effect of the Wynwood Arts District. I had looked up the area, and my good friend and I had thought it would be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon – a couple of hours.

We found a tasty place for brunch and saw a few signs for galleries and a few unique murals. But as we started walking, we were overwhelmed by the graffiti, murals and art.

It wasn’t just a few hidden here or there – it was everywhere. A warehouse and industrial district, there are a  few low-rise condominiums and some art galleries, but it was the blank canvas of warehouse walls and garage doors that became the canvas.

Block and blocks of graffiti and murals were on display – dazzling colours of rainbow, bold black and white, political, funny, comical – it was all here. I was stunned. I spotted a few names I knew on the walls and saw many I would maybe only see here. As a contemporary art experience, it was unforgettable.

It made me happy to be surrounded by this creativity – and my camera got a workout (as did my feet walking endless blocks, lured by another wall, door and burst of colour)
