Fave places 2012: the island of Grenada, West Indies Caribbean (part two)

Grenada - nutmegMy return to this West Indian island was marked with the return to see a few of the interesting places I got to see on my first visit. The understanding of the Spice Isle’s main contribution to the world – nutmeg – is something I love to see.

Going to a spice boucan and a processing plant, was fascinating – that this small brown spice is lovingly handled by so many before being shipped off the island.

But I was thrilled to participate in something new to me – watching leatherback turtles lay their eggs on the island. Heading to their protected area late at night, we waited for a couple of hours before the turtles made their appearance. Volunteers track their progress and help the turtles, sometimes by moving their eggs to a safer spot higher on the beach.

Mother Nature is in full bloom on this island, and it never fails to impress.
