Lure of the murals (part one)

Philadelphia - detail of Legacy mural Little did I know that Philadelphia is a city of murals. There are hundreds of them, easily spotted on the side of buildings where advertising would usually be.

This city embraced its public art with an ongoing mural project.

Initially launched to prevent the graffiti, the mural project has added another lure to the city for visitors with this open air art gallery. a perfect way to see some art without paying a cent, and explore the city at the same time.

I was given a self-guided walking tour map of the some of the major murals of the downtown, including one called Legacy by Josh Sarantitis.

Created by a partnership of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the Lincoln Financial Foundation, this colourful mural is inspired by Abraham Lincoln.

Sarantitis was not alone in the creation process, working with five other artists, the men of SCI Graterford as well as local elementary school students.

I can’t imagine a better way to learn about art than participating in the creation of something that will be seen on a daily basis by hundreds of people, some repeatedly as they commute to work and some for one time as they come across it thanks to a map like I did.
