What’s in season in Mesa, Arizona? Citrus!

For many of us easterners, we assume all citrus comes from Florida (or Central and South America) in the winter months, but there’s another hot spot – southern Arizona:

At The Orange Patch farm, there’s all kinds of citrus ready for picking right now – orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, tangello – and the processing is pretty simple – checking the fruit and packing them into boxes to be shipped:

Taking time to wander the farm store, I WISHED I could have bought a dozen of everything in sight:

I learned how the industry like a lot of farming is precarious – prices are much, much lower than the past, and demand can be fickle. But seeing these beautiful, bright fruit, getting the sweet whiff of citrus as I walked through the farm stand, I couldn’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to buy.

Just another reason to travel south – for this seasonal hit of sweet citrus.
