Welcome to Beijing

My second visit to China and my first visit to the massive, busy city of Beijing.

I headed to the nearby old shopping district of Dahzalan, a mere 10 minutes from my hotel, and it was a wonderful introduction to the neighbourhood – restaurants, shops, street vendors – and plentyof scents, sounds and distractions.

The neon lights of the stores, the bright red and gold lanterns hung from the buildings and the swirl of people was a noisy welcome to this big city:

There was plenty of stimulus for all my senses, but among the crowds, the sweet sounds of a local street musician was the most memorable welcome for me that night:

It was a early note of the unique mix of China – a massive country heading fast into the 21st century with its past still a welcome part of everyday life in this metropolis.
