Kayaking in the hotel’s backyard

What’s your view of Orlando? The Magic Kingdom? Universal? Outlet shopping? How about a cyprus forest and a slow moving creek for kayaking?

Orlando - Shingle Creek

Two hotel properties, the Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott Grand Lakes sit on an extensive parcel of 500 acres – and in their backyard, behind the golf course, is this lovely spot – this is Shingle Creek.

The hotels offer eco-tours of the creek, going out in kayaks to see the local flora and occasional fauna. Good morning Alligator…

Orlando - gator

The majority of the tour was through the trees – shaded from the morning sun and spotting herons and osprey (and the occasional spider). Hard to believe that less than a 10 minute golf cart ride away, there is multi-lanes of traffic and hundreds of people on their way to work and play.

And to kickstart a day in the Florida sunshine, before the numerous activities claim your attention, this quiet and beautiful spot is a worthy way to see what Florida really does look like – and found in a hotel’s backyard.
